Puritan Culture

Hello Youg Scholars,

Hopefully you enjoyed youe Labor Day weekend without much labor! This week's article is from a HISTORY textbook (you can stop cheering now). I know that most of the time reading a textbook article is boring, but the information in this article is really interesting. We have been talking about how Puritans resemble contamporary Americans, and now we learn some surprising things about how Puritans really behaved. So read the article and discuss with me things you find surprising, shocking, or funny. How are the Puritans different than what you originally believed? Remember, we are developing our writing skills, so be thoughtful and go beyond the "I like this because". Remember, I don't cre if you like it, I just care thast you know it :)

Love y'all!

  1. I think it is shocking that the Puritians would fine or whip a person because they had a child without being married and they cheated on their wife or husband. I think this is taking it overboard because God allow people to make mistakes and you ask for forgiveness. I think peotry is still like a visual art because it puts pictures in your mind. I thought Purtians were similar to Christianity but they are not because christians believe that if you pray and ask for forgiveness it is forgiven but Purtians believe you should be punished.

  3. I knew the Puritains valued their relationship with God to the highest. Yet, I find some of their practices unjust. What they were doing was not wrong in my opinion. But they were too strict in some of their views. Yes God wants those who beilive to follow him and spread his word. But it may seem as the Puritians were trying to become to pure. If the Puritians want to beat on their kids and never drink thats cool with me, but it is our job as humans to make mistakes. But along this road we must learn from them, as well as becoming a better christian along the way.

  4. I beleive they are a bit more uptight than i had thought but i still think they were pretty fair folk considering the general temperament back then. Overall i still wouldnt want to be a puritan, the whole "zealotry/church fanclub" attitude doesnt suit me, but overall they were decent hard working folk with far superior moral values than we have today.

  5. What I found most suprising is that the purtians didnt find that drinking alcholic breverages was sinful. Their all about being christians, however do not set up church an state. They had sexual relations outside of marriage. They believed that the primary purpose of government was to punish breaches of God's laws. To my point of view im not sure if I understand their ways of doing things as godly people.

  7. I was shocked that Puritans didn't obtain from alcohol usage. I figured since they were highly relgious then they would find alcohol as a major sin. I also thought they only had an interest for dark colors, however they also favored the colors red and blue. It surprised me when I read that the Puritans didn't set up a church or state either. What really hit me was when I read about how many divorces they had. I always thought that the Puritans revoked against that because it's considered "ungodly". They don't seem to be as christian as everyones says.

  9. The lifes of Americans today, is very much based on the early settlers otherwise known as puritans.
The Puritans were people who were hardworking,God fearing and best of all great beleives.Americans today share the same virtues. No matter how tough life is the American attitude is to push on, with the hope of a better tomorrow. The Puritans knew the task ahead was tough but never beleived it was impossible, such is the present American belief. Many Americans don't know the work impoddible they make sure the at least put in effort into whatever they may be facing. The Puritans helped people who didn't want to help the sick,Americans today lend out aid to other countries that might have turned their back on this country in one way or the other.
I believe American still runs on the virtues of the Puritans.

  10. I was very surprised to learn that the Puritans are not much different than we are today.I always thought the Puritans were very strict, boring and unaccepting of others. People still view Christians in the same way today as they viewed Puritans back then. This article shows you can have moral values and still have fun.

  11. it suprised me that they keep church and state separate...it suprised me that some of their favorite colors were blue and red...or the fact that in their marriage physical relations was a common thing...i prejudged that they would be these religious shrouds who were black and sleep in separate beds.. haha

  12. The puritans society and our society now are closely related. Just like the puritans, some of us think wrong of people who commit adultry, or when people who have children before marriage. But, we do not take it as far as giving a fine to that person or whipping them. I didn't get where they thought alcohol wasn't sinful though. I always thought that the puritans would be the type to look down on alcoholic bevrages. Come to find out in this reading, we aren't as different as I thought.

  13. I found it interesting that Puritan society was not as strict as it is made out to be. In fact, they were allowed to do things that we as modern Americans do today. Such as voting, having sex, and drinking alcohol in moderation were accepted in Puritan society. However i find it funny that modern Americans do these things to a more extreme extent.

  14. The first thing that surprised me is that they did not think that alcohol was bad, but it was wrong for them to have a sexual relations outside of marriage. What also surprised me was that they kept their church and government separate, and that they forbade minister from holding public office.

  15. Well i thought that the puritans only wore black with a little white but that is completely wrong. I come to find that they wore red and blue colors. I find it shocking that they didn't find drinking to be a sin. The puritans didn't set up a church-run state which is what i have been taught. The puritans have inspired this country a lot and still does till this day, which is pretty cool.

  16. In my opinion the Puritans are crazy. They worship invisible beings, made everybody follow these ridiculously strict rules, and did everything very different then we do now. They had that good ol' American spirit we have today, with the dedication and the work values. I thought they could only wear black, I was shocked to see they also wore blue and red!

  17. In the article I learned many interesting things. Something I found shocking was the fact that the Puritans held annual elections in Massachusetts. This was shocking because this was nearly one hundred years before the first  president of the United States and they had already started a government. Also, it was funny when it said "the Puritans were not sexual prudes. Although they strongly condemned sexual relations outside of marriage." I always thought that people back then were very proper and didn't want sex but to object it. My view of the Puritans from the beginning was much different because I looked at them as people that were secluded and proper. From my new perception of the Puritans, I now look at them as a colony that was very organized and came up with a great idea of a government.
