Chrisitanity and the Founding of Our Country

Happy Monday young scholars!

This week's article is meant to show you exactly how not "Puritan" our Founding Fathers were (I know, last week I was telling you how Puritan Americans ARE, and today, I'm telling you we're not). This article is meant to demonstrate the varied Christian influences on our country's founding. Read it. DIgest it. Then write a GOOD paragraph about whether or not our country is still living according to Christian values (please don't give me the boring answer of "no, because we are a meltng pot". Give me real answers that examine how our American society works, from the government to the small things people do each day.

  1. Overall i think that the majority of americans are still christians or at least consider themselves to be, but they arent nearly as pious or as devout as they were back in "the olden days" AKA the time of the puritans, the time where religion was the key factor in uniting our country and people. So yes, we are still living according to christian values (at least some of us are) but they arent as pure or as dedicated to them as they should be according to the Puritans.

  2. I think that most of America is still based off of the Christian values. Back in the day the values used to be a lot stronger than they are today. Today there are restrictions to some of the values. From these values came our rights, freedom, and a chance to pursue happiness.

  3. I believe that that some of us are and some of us aren't still living according to the Christian values. Not as many people follow them as strongly as they did back then. Then again some of us are. Even though the Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal and are endowed to their own happiness some of us aren't. Some people are looked down upon because of what they believe in is not a Christian value. So since its not a Christian value people tend to believe in other things and not have the same values as Christians.

  4. In my opinion our Country is not living up to the Christian values of our Puritian roots. Although there are still some christian americans who worship god, go to church, and express god's word through their christian like actions, but our country as a whole I cannot say the same for. For example, for puritains church was mandatory. If that were the case today we would most likely have a modern Jonathan Edwards giving us a sermon on how we are all really going to hell now. On another note the youth of the puritain age were taught by the word of the bible. Today, many teens wouldn't be caught dead in church. This is not bad in my opinion because everyone should have a choice to live as they want. But according to the puritains this would be very sinful.

  5. I think today everybody does not believe in the same faith. But our country still try to live up to the Christian values. Like when the government put in god we trust on every dollar bill. Also when we pledge to the american flag. Still our government does it follow the Christian values, and some people do not follow. Some people don't even believe in god, and they do not follow the christian values. So most of our country do follow the Christian values, but not all of our country.

  6. Some American's today do follow the Christean values and still go to church to practice them. We may not do as they did back then, but that is only because there is a mixture of different religous background. Some people believe in God and others don't, we don't have to if we don't want to. In the constitution it says we have the freedom to religion, I think that is because America is a "melting pot" and there are other religions than just Christianity.

  7. Americans,in my opinion still believe in Puritan christians values, but would rather not expose it in public. The problem is politics;the government does not want to look biased toward the unbelievers. They do stuff like, taking prayers out of schools, out of public events and much more. Teenagers today, don't even want their friends to know about their faith because they think its embarassing to be know as the "good christian". Our society today is falling back from christianity.
I believe we should step up for our own integrity and be allowed to show our faith anywhere. If our motto says in "God We Trust" and schools are not allowed to speak about the bible, then I don't know what the country is turning into.

  8. Dont think we take the christian values seriously like we did back then , because some people have different religion and beliefs are different too. but we still have the values, for example "In God We Trust" our national moto & etc.

  9. Many Americans' today claim the Christian lable, but not many live it up to it's full potental. The true meaning of "Christian" has changed so much. Public schools arn't even allowed to teach about God's word while back in the "Puritan era", that's all that was taught. So many ungodly things are considered okay and mostly "cool". Though when you try to talk about God's word, nobody wants to listen. Todays society is mostly overall just all talk when it comes to being a Christian. Not everybody is, but some are.

  11. Yes I belive America is still living on Christian values, even though we may many different other religion we still focus on the main one...Christianity, becuase there are many types of Christianity still and there is no way it could die off unless if every one stopped believing in it.

  12. I believe that our country is not living by the principles of our founding fathers. Today public workers can be fired and arrested for displaying their religious views. People don't say the pledge or stand for the national anthem anymore. Most people don't go to church and think God is a myth. There is no sense of personal responsibility anymore and the Bible states we should be responsible for our actions. The further our country gets away from the values of our founding fathers the worse it gets.

  13. I think our country has changed extremely on this subject over the years. It is not the same. That is why I am not sure what i believe. Many people claim to be to be Christians but no longer devote themselves and pray to God as they did in the past. I use to go to church. I have been to different types of Christian churches until i realized that more than half the people there even sometimes the preachers are hypocrites. Yes, they are liars who sin continuously but pretend to be some good person they aren't to justify how they really feel about themselves. Therefore, I think our country is no longer living according to Christian values. So whether you're a Christian or not, be honest with yourself. Pause and think about what you truly believe.

  14. Our country has gine from having religion as the main force behind you. Now we get up go to work and come home and the bible is the least read book on our shelf. Though there are some christians who go to church and live by the word of god, most do not or believe in something else. Instead of looking forward to nature and what we have, we think of work and how much money we can make.

  15. No because not everyone sees the world the same, and if you are of another religion you would not see the world from Christian point of view. I also think that with all of our differences we are a lot alike. It dose not matter what you believe in when you live in a AMERICA AKA the GREATEST country in the world you my friend are in AMERICA so believe in what you want.

  16. Yes, i believe America stills lives by Christian vaules. Some just lives by them stronger then others. As an example "Sinners In The Anger Hands Of God " Edwards states that just because you living a healthy life doesn't mean you are going to heaven. He believes you have to be born again. Others believes that if they just live the life that they expect God wants them to live; then thats their key to heaven doors. Those who live Christian vaules stronger accept God as their Lord and saver. Even though the Declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal and are endowed to their own happiness some of us aren't. Just because you believe in an different religion some of us are looked down on. As in one's belief is better or stronger then the next one. As an American you have the right to believe in any religion. No matter who are what you believe in , just remember to believe in yourself.

  17. i belive that it is kind of difficult to judge our whole society as one on our religouse belive because we are all individuals andvery different. i belive that the govenment has no christian belives and if they dothereno showing it well AT ALL! impretty sure Goddoesntwant us bombing eachother over some oil and petty disagreements. i feel like if the govenment say there religouse its nothing but a front and they need to start practacing what there pature is preaching. Like i said before with our people in this worl yes i feel like every one has a religouse belive wether they go to church or just simply pray when they need some guidence in there life i feel as if our whole world needs a good taste of morals and coppasion and care for one another.

well im not really sure if that was what i was supposed to do^^^ because i dont really no what you guyshave been talking aboutbut i hope that was somewhat close (:

  18. There is still a healthy variety of Christian values in our country today, but that doesn't mean there isn't a heavy amount of anti-christianity either. The fact that anything to do with religios values in school aren't welcomed is the thing that is hard to grasp, it doesn't harm anyone to talk about being saved or not, or what the bible says in my opinion, what is and isn't allowed is crazy nowadays, but all in all our country as a whole was shaped mostly by christianity, and the U.S. tries it's hardest to keep that in mind, as well as keep Christianity alive.

  19. Personally I don’t believe our country is living according to Christian values. Back in the Puritan time, people obeyed God’s word and lived according to God’s teachings. Today a school teacher can’t mention anything about God in the classroom. I’m surprised that we are still allowed to have a moment of silence and say the pledge of Allegience in school. Many people call themselves Christians because they go to church on Sunday morning, but that does not make a person a Christian. A Christian lives daily for Jesus and lives according to His word all the time and not just in church. In my opinion, I don’t feel that our president is a Christian because he believes and supports non-Christian teachings and lifestyles.

  20. In today's world, our country does not still live according to Christian values. In the Declaration of Independence it protects people's unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness which allows freedom of religion.  In the 1600s and 1700s Anglicans, Puritans, Baptists, Catholics, Quakers,  Jews, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Dutch Reformed and others came into America, and it reflected a melting pot of diversity. Ever since, then many things have changed in our country. The White House changed Merry Christmas to happy holidays and no longer do kids say the pledge of allegiance in schools. I think it is ridiculous that even our president believes in a foreign religion which is not like the religion of what our founding fathers believe in. I believe that these Christian values are what made America and should not be taken away.

  21. No I don't think our country is living the "Christian values". ("Posting the Ten Commandments in a public school is now a criminal act"(Rod Gragg)). I think this quote right here say it all. We as a country have "Freedom of speech" but can't talk about our own faith?! Our country wants to please everybody and not affined nobody. So we put are Christian values on the back burner which I think is so wrong. I find it offending as a Christian that our country dose not takes its Christian values. So no I DO NOT think we live according to Christian values.

  22. This country was founded on fath, however it's not the faith people look at. The values layed down by the puritans are what people see. Even tho religion today is misunderstood and often disliked; the morals of religion are taken in by nonbelievers. They know that faith sets the pace for laws but yet they ignore the faith. People just want an idea to keep them going; an idea to make their lives worth living. An idea to be good in all you do, no matter what.
