Transcendentalism
Hey Young Scholars!
When the cat's away, the mice will play. When Mrs. H is away, you will complete this webquest on Thoreau. Complete the essay part (at the bottom) on paper and turn in by Friday :)
Henry David Thoreau quoted : "The greater part of what my neighbors call good I believe in my soul to be bad, and if I repent of anything, it is very likely to be my good behavior. What demon possessed me that I behaved so well?" Mr. Thoreau had four books , like Waden, The Maine Woods, Cape Cod, & A Yankee in Canada. Thoreau lived in the woods because he wanted to lived the simply life, it would be really spiritual, & he lived in his cabin for two years. And he wrote his book about "Nature". It was basically how he lived in the wilderness, environment & stuff like that.
The ways that he uses transcendentalism because he looks into the pond and he remembers the memories he had. Thoreau lived in the woods becuase he wanted to live more dliberately, and so he can focus on the key aspects on nature and compare it to human.
Thoreau stated: "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and not discover when I came to die that I had not lived." Thoreau believed in going on ones own and thinking about things we see everyday. Now this may sound strange, but he did this, away from people. The reason being is to think on his own. Let his own mind come up with the ideas that werent on a basis of his society. This often helps people to come up with new and original ideas. What he ment by not live is basically thinking with his very own brain and coming up with things his way through his point of view. This was very ingenious so as to not get caught up in shallow modern living.
