Another poet you should read (but we won't have time IN class)

Hello Young Scholars!

Have I told you all lately how proud I am of all of your hard work? No, well I AM. You are all really stepping up when it comes to these blog posts.

This week, I want you to read a little about the most famous and wonderful woman, Phillis Wheatly. SHe was the first African American female poet, and she was a contemporary (that means she lived during the same time) of Jefferson, Franklin, and Henry. I don't just want to teach you the writing of dead white men, but we won't have time to cover her poetry in class. So go to the following link:

http://www.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/phillis-wheatley-106.php

After reading her biography, find ANY poem of hers that you want to read, and read it. Then respond, answering the following questions. (IF EVERYONE DOES THE SAME POEM, YOU WILL ALL BE FLOGGED).

1) Poem name, and date it was written/ published
2) Summary of the poem
3) Tone of the poem (remember that tone means how the writer feels about the subject, an example is if I am a poet and I use the term "snot-nosed brat" to refer to a young man, the tone is disrespectful toward the young man, but if I use the  term "well-mannered young gentleman" it shows that I like him, and believe him to be intelligent)
4) Mood (How do the words that the author uses make YOU FEEL inside)
5) Personal reaction. What does this poem make you think about, feel, or want to do? (If you skip this or give me the old "It doesn't make me want to do anything, and I don't feel anything because I don't understand it" You will get a zero. If you need help, select a different poem, or see me after school or during any lunch for help.

Peace!

Mrs. H

  1. P. Wheatley 1767

Basically asking how can you not beleive in god, how else could this wonderful world perfect for us have been created, fearing for the hell they(aetheists) will go to because of how blind they are to the wonders of god.

The tone is that of shock, wonder, somewhat condescending and in my opinion contains a "browbeating" approach.

the mood to me was best described as the feeling you get when a nagging parent/teacher explains something to you while making you feel as stupid as possible, slowly and deliberately explaining things.

to be honest it makes me want to rewrite the poem in modern words, other than that it makes me want to check out the local church a bit more often.

  2. I read the poem "On the Death of J.C. an Infant". I didn't see the date it was written. The poem was about J.C.who was an infant who died at birth. She writes about how he will never smile again. She also writes for people not to grieve because he is in heaven. The tone of the writer was started off being sad because the child had died, but turned to gladness because the child is in Heaven. It made me feel sad because the child died so young. But I know where you go when you die.I liked the poem but I wondered how the child died.

  3. The poem I read is Athiest and it was written in 1769. The summary of this poem is that Phillis Wheatley is addressing to people who are'nt Christian and telling them who do they belive them, who gave you life and so forth. The tone of this poem would be that she is a very intelligent and very modern at her time. This poem makes me feel religious becuase of all the preaching she is doing. After reading this poem it makes me want to go to a church and preach this poem to anybody who is athiest and see if this would make them change.

  4. 1. "A Funeral Poem On The Death Of C. E. An Infant Of Twelve Months"
written in 1784 and printed in 1786
    2. This poem was about a couple's baby that died. In the poem Phillis
comforts the parents by telling them not to feel guilty for there loss that
their son was in a better place and that one day they would meet him
    once again in heaven eternity.
    3. I believe the tone is positive towards the parents of the child sort of a
pick me up in regard to their loss.
    4. The tone is very sad and emotional. A feeling like this is hard for
someone like me to comprehend because i don't have a child but, a
parent's love for their child is very strong unlike anything else.
    5. This poem is very depressing. If it were a movie I would immediately
have to watch a comedy afterword to forget the sad feeling brought by
    it.

  6. The poem I had red was "The Death of Charles Eliot" - 1772. The poem is published in Wheatley's book. Charles Eliot was but 12 months old when he died, and in the poem Wheatley attempts to offer solace to the parents, based upon the notion that the baby died in a "pure" state and would be happier in heaven. She's basically showing how much it is honor to have a baby & cherish those moments with that a person/baby, because you never know what's coming to you until it gets here. This poems is so depressing, After reading it? It changes how I look at teenagers that are 16 years old and keeping/having their babies.

    4) Mood: uneasy, sad.

    5) Personal reaction. What does this poem make you think about, feel, or want to do?: The poem makes me think about how hard it was for them to be force to leave everything they know, and come here to do hard labor. It makes you feel sorry for these people and you just want to reach out and help them.

  8. I read atheism:it was written in july of 1769.She is basically condems the unbelievers in the begining and then describes the heavenly realm and says how God will show his wrath against unbelievers. Her tone is anger toward Atheism and love toward Christians. Her choice of words were strong and emotional. It makes you aware of the reality of God.It makes me want to strengthen my faith and keep God first in all my endeavors.

  9. I read a poem called A Rebus. I couldnt find the date it was made or published but it was by Phillis Wheatley. The poem seems to me to be about britains rule over the american colonies. She calls them "the horned race" comparing them to evil. This may signify some resentment from the triangular trade or the opression of british rule over the colonies. The tone was very dark and the mood was hateful. This shows how the british mistreated every american no matter the race.

  11. 1)Poem name and date published: Atheism, written in 1769
    2) Summary of the poem: Phillis Wheatly is unhappy with the new idea of people branching away from God in search of another meaning.
    3) Tone of the poem: Angry
    4) Mood: Disapointed, uneasy
    5) Personal reaction: From my point of view I agree with Wheatly. Although people deserve to believe whatever they want to but at the same time being a christian myself I bielive that introducing others to God is for the good of the world and others as well.
